What Is Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)?

Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) is a set of academic standards that students must meet to remain eligible for federal financial aid and to demonstrate they are successfully advancing toward their degree. While specific requirements can vary by institution, SAP typically includes three key components:
  1. Grade Point Average (GPA)
    • Maintaining a minimum cumulative GPA, often at least a 2.0 on a 4.0 scale for undergraduates.
  2. Completion Rate (Pace of Progression)
    • Successfully completing a certain percentage of attempted courses, usually at least 67%.
  3. Maximum Time Frame
    • Completing your degree within a maximum time frame, typically 150% of the program's published length (e.g., finishing a four-year degree within six years).
